Char Kuey Teow

Penang is famous for its charred and aromatic Char Kuey Teow found at hawker centres. This flat rice noodle is fried in high heat with prawns, cockles, eggs and bean sprouts in a fiery display over a charcoal fire.

Nasi Kandar

A popular local feast of curry-based meat dishes and vegetables served with hot steamed rice. Indian-Muslim vendors traditionally walked the city streets with baskets carried over the shoulder on bamboo poles. Today, Nasi Kandar restaurants are found everywhere in Penang.

Asam Laksa

The world famous Penang Asam Laksa is a sour and spicy noodle dish consisting of tangy fish broth that will tease and tantalise your taste buds. Filled to the brim, a bowl of thick rice noodle is generously garnished with finely-sliced onions, cucumber, pineapple, red chillies, mint and torch ginger buds. It's also served with a spoonful of thick prawn paste for those who love an even fuller flavour.

It's a sweet icy delight to indulge in on a hot day. Cendol's signature green jelly noodles are served over shaved ice with kidney beans and drizzled with copious amounts of coconut milk and palm sugar syrup.

Pasembur

Pasembur or us Northerners call it "Pasemboq" is a Malaysian salad consisting of shredded cucumber, potatoes, bean curd, turnip, bean sprouts, prawns fritters, spicy fried crab, fried squid or other seafoods and dressed with a sweet and spicy nut sauce.

Mee Sotong

Mee Sotong is a famous dish prepared by Indian-Muslim hawkers, made from stir-fried yellow noodles, chilli paste, ketchup, soy sauce, eggs, bean sprouts and potatoes. The noodles are the topped with the 'main character', which is the sotong (cuttlefish).

Roti Canai

Roti canai is a traditional pan-fried flatbread made with flour, water, eggs, and fat of Indian origin, but mainly associated with Malaysia. This flaky, crispy flatbread served with dhal (lentil curry) or various other curries is perfect for breakfast or a snack.

Nasi Lemak

Malaysia's national dish, Nasi lemak, is a rice dish commonly served with roasted nuts, egg, ikan bilis (anchovies), and slices of cucumber. Literally meaning “fatty rice” in Malay, nasi lemak's distinctive taste comes from cooking the rice in coconut milk and pandan leaves which gives the dish its rich flavour and fragrant aroma.
